Student Voice – Empowering & Engaging Students

Student Voice – Empowering & Engaging Students

Written By:  Tim Herrmann, Rotary Club of Florence

Join the Rotary Club of Florence, serving all of Boone County (@FlorenceRotary), on Monday, March 11, 2024, at noon as Boone County School (@Boone_County) Superintendent Matt Turner (@SuptTurner) discusses “Student Voice – Empowering & Engaging Students.” Over 20 years ago, the Boone County Schools were the first school district in the state to include a non-voting student board member on the school board and later creating the Boone County Schools Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (@BooneCountySSAC). Superintendent Turner and several members of his student advisory council will share how this board position teaches leadership skills and empowers students to be involved and have a voice in their schools.

Matt Turner started his career in education in 1991. Prior to his appointment as Superintendent of Boone County Schools, Matt served for 14 years as Principal of Northern Kentucky’s largest high school – Larry A. Ryle High School – with a population of 2000 students. Previous to this, he served as Assistant Principal at three area high schools – Ryle HS in Union; Lloyd Memorial HS in Erlanger & Williamstown HS in Williamstown.

Turner’s instructional and administrative experience is vast. He has worked in rural, urban, and suburban settings – from small towns to larger metropolitan areas. He has impacted students both in and outside of the classroom, teaching math, coaching baseball and basketball, and serving in a dual capacity role as Athletic Director and Assistant Principal.

He is known as a gifted leader and administrator throughout Kentucky, with a strong track record of leading teams centered around a shared vision. He earned his School Superintendent Certificate from Xavier University, his Rank 1 Certification in Instructional Leadership from Northern Kentucky University, and his Master’s in Secondary Education & Teaching – Mathematics from the University of Kentucky, where he also holds a Bachelor’s in Mathematics.

Turner’s background in educational leadership includes the completion of Harvard’s Executive Leadership Program for Educators as well as graduation from the National Institute of School Leadership’s Executive Development Program (NISL). He commits to serving and supporting multiple professional organizations and initiatives, just as he’s doing for our group today. This experience and expertise combine to reinforce Turner’s appointment as the head of Kentucky’s third largest district of 21,000 students, where he enjoys leading his district in Achieving Excellence Together.

He is originally from Danville, KY. He and his wife, Debra, are the proud parents of two sons, Drew and Chase.
