Dr. Joseph Bark, a practicing Dermatologist from Lexington KY, visited Florence Rotary September 19th for a presentation of “Interesting Changes in Dermatology”. Dr. Bark is a Past President of the Lexington Rotary Club and a Past District Governor for Rotary’s Eastern Kentucky District.

He began his presentation with a reminder of Rotary’s commitment to end Polio and how very close we are to reaching that goal. Dr. Bark then moved into the heart of his material, and delighted Rotarians and guests with his reminder that “no rule or law dictates that we must look and feel old as we age”.

Dr. Bark discussed treatments for thinning eyelashes, for psoriasis, for rosacea, and elimination or minimizing wrinkles through the use of Botox. He pointed out that in each area significant advances have been made in recent years, and that research is ongoing to find new and less expensive treatments. He expressed his view that taking care of our skin and looking our best is more a matter of self-concern than vanity, and pointed out that skin is the largest organ in the human body. He reminded the audience that are many options available today to facilitate maintaining a youthful and healthy appearance, with extremely low risk of complications.

Dr. Bark has written three books on skin care for the lay public and is currently at work on a fourth. He is a nationally known television and radio personality, consulting with several networks and numerous publications. He is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology and is Fellow of the Royal College of Medicine. Locally he was a monthly guest for four years on the Bob Braun Show in Cincinnati, and continues weekly educational spots on TV in Lexington.

Florence Rotary features a wide variety of speakers and topics throughout the year. Rotarians benefit by learning about community projects, new businesses, political initiatives, humanitarian needs locally, nationally and across the globe, and subjects that affect many of us personally. Guests are always welcome.
