Rotary Club of Florence Honors Citizen of the Year – Scott Spicher – Founder of Honor Run Half Marathon

Scott Spicher Citizen of the Year

The Rotary Club of Florence, Kentucky is honored to announce the recipient of the 2020 Citizen of the Year, Scott Spicher.

As nominated by Florence Mayor Diane Whalen , “ Scott’s wide-range of leadership and contributions to the citizens of our Scott Spichercommunity make him the perfect candidate for this award. His dedication and compassion to our veterans is to be admired”

“Scott’s mission to give back to our Veteran community was inspired by his grandfather, a POW during WWII.  His along with his wife Laura dedication to veterans led to the creation of the Honor Run Half Marathon which is held in the City of Florence each year during Veterans Day weekend.  The proceeds from the event are donated to the Honor Flight Tri-State.  Through this donation, veterans who have served their country during WWII, Korea or Vietnam are flown to Washington DC for the day to visit the memorials”

In addition to Honor Flight Tri-State, a portion of the proceeds are also donated to Habitat for Humanity to assist Boone County Veterans.  The Honor Run Half Marathon was voted as one of the Top 20 Half Marathons in 2020 by BibRave 100.

Scott is a resident of Boone County and an educator, currently serving as the Principal at Dry Ridge Elementary.  He has encouraged and built into many students in our community through his involvement with the Jaguars Running Club.  Scott Spicher - Laura Spicher - Honor Flight Participants

The Citizen of the Year Award was created in 1995 and has honored over 30 inductees since its inception.  Previous recipients have included teachers, pastors, doctors, coaches, neighbors, non-profit directors, postmasters, missionaries, administrators and many others.

Established in 1945, the Rotary Club of Florence consists of 100 business and community leaders from across northern Kentucky.  The Florence Rotary Club is a civic club that is part of Rotary International, an organization of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, and community leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world.
