Florence, Kentucky – February 11th, 2021 – The Rotary Club of Florence, Kentucky held a meeting on February 8th, 2021 with David Koester. David talked about his extensive career in agriculture and the importance of supporting local farmers. He also provided information on the Boone County Extension Office and their horticulture program.
David starts off the meeting by discussing all the local farmer’s markets in Boone, Kenton, and Campbell counties. He stated that there are 160 markets across 110 counties in Kentucky.
The impacts that COVID – 19 has had on local farmers and what we can do to support them was discussed as well. David says that once farmer’s markets reopen in the summer, it is important to attend them and buy as many goods as possible to keep our local farms going.
David then talked about the role of the Boone County Extension Office and their horticulture program. The office is a part of the University of Kentucky and Kentucky State University. Their main goal is support to the smaller and minority farms around Kentucky. The horticulture program goes into schools and educates children about farming and all of the different aspects of horticulture. They also analyze soil samples, train Master Gardener volunteers, and hold traditional classes at their office.
