Think CVG first. CVG is the primary passenger and cargo hub in our region, providing over 200 flights per day to 53 non-stop cities. CVG is currently served by seven airlines, and is the only airport in the tri-state with non-stop flights to Europe. Those were a few of the highlights of the message Barbara Schempf delivered to Florence Rotary at their August 29th meeting. Ms. Schempf is the Director of Public and Governmental Affairs at the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport. Her report to the community focused on future growth, consolidation, renovation and revenue diversification at the airport.
Ms. Schempf highlighted future plans for CVG, including discussions to bring in additional carriers. “We are talking with all parties, including low-cost carriers” Ms. Schempf reported. CVG is also working with local business leader to identify future needs as part of CVG’s master plan for growth. Work is currently underway to renovate Concourse A in Terminal 3. Completion is scheduled for the summer of 2012. The new Concourse A will house 16 gates, and has been designed to showcase the local region and enhance the overall image of the airport. Airlines currently operating out of Terminal 2 will be moved to Concourse A, leaving 8 gates available for additional carriers. Final determination on the future of Terminal 1 and 2 is expected in 2012.
Ms. Schempf reported that CVG is also a cargo hub for the area, and pointed out that cargo operations support passenger service. The return of DHL to CVG has helped to diversify airport revenue and added jobs to the local economy. CVG now serves as a North American and Gateway hub for DHL, and expansion continues. Ms. Schempf also noted that CVG has over 7000 acres available for future development.
CVG has gained national recognition as the best regional airport in North America and the top-ranked airport for staff service excellence. The airport has continued to operate with the highest levels of safety and security, and significantly exceeds Transportation Security Administration regulations. CVG was the first airport in the country to receive certification under the Safety Act.
