At the Florence Rotary Meeting held Monday, July 21 at the Hilton of Florence, BCM’s Education Director Regina Siegrist shared the story of the Museum in Covington’s Devou Park and what’s next in its future.

From the ridiculous – the infamous two-headed calf, to the sublime – the 1892 Kentucky streetcar and significant local artist collections, or the innovative freshART event and the annual family traditions such as Music@BCM concert series and the Holiday Toy Trains, Behringer-Crawford Museum (BCM) impacts the community through its unique and steady focus on interpreting NKY’s heritage, specializing in the interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and cross-genre melding of cultural arts and historical perspective through the lens of transportation.

Reviewed from a Trip Advisor patron as the “Best place to get to know your area’s roots!” BCM hosts several rotating exhibits per year in combination with its sixteen permanent displays.  The current exhibit, “Vietnam: Our Story” is a compilation of area veteran experiences during the war, as told by them.  A video complements the exhibits as well as personal artifacts from many who are featured in the display.

Opening in October will be an exhibit associated with the regional wide FotoFocus exhibits featuring photographers and photographs.  “50 Years of Photojournalism: 1960-2010 Winter Edition” will showcase images of winter in Northern Kentucky in the last 50 years as published in our local newspapers.

A favorite annual event, the Music@BCM concert series continues its success, with up to 300 – 400 in attendance each week listening to a wide genre of local musical talents. As noted from a recent patron, “this is the most rockin’ museum – I’ll be back!” The series ends August 7 with a popular reprise of the Bourbon n’ Blues concert featuring the Tim Goshorn band.

Enjoy Art 3-Ways at BCM on Sept 13th. BCM will once again host its 22nd  freshART event. This year in addition to the signature plain air event where artists create an original work in the park during the day to be auction off that evening and the silentART where artist submit original previously completed works BCM has added NEXT-Gen. NEXT-Gen, the cheese on top, is an exciting new opportunity for promising high school and college art students to showcase and promote their art.

As if these activities aren’t enough, BCM conducts educational programming meeting common core standards with many of the NKY schools.  Private grants fund scholarships for field trips to allow up to 9,000 students per year to participate in these programs for free.

And as part of the upcoming Covington 200 Bicentennial celebration, more programs have been developed specific to Covington’s history and new exhibits are underway with a complete Rails Gallery renovation.

BCM is certainly not your grandmother’s museum.  Rockin’ music, family and classroom enrichment programs with a multitude of hands-on activities, engaging exhibits and plain air artists capturing historic landscapes, there’s not a static and dusty history lesson in the house!
